The dog breed

The history of the Coton de Tuléar is closely linked to the history of seafaring. It is believed that the ancestors of this breed were brought to Madagascar by Portuguese and Spanish sailors in the 16th century. There they crossed with native dogs and developed into the breed we know today. Ordinary citizens were forbidden to own such a dog under penalty of punishment. Its cottony coat also gave it its name: Because “coton” means cotton.

The Coton de Tuléar is an extremely affectionate and loyal dog. He loves to spend time with his family and is always eager to please his owners. Its friendly and playful nature makes it an ideal family dog that is also good with children. Cotons de Tuléar are intelligent and docile. They are therefore easy to train and are also suitable for beginners in dog sports. Thanks to their cottony coat, they require regular grooming. This keeps their beautiful coat healthy and shiny. Brushing and combing should be part of everyday life.

Thanks to its small size, the Coton de Tuléar is ideal for traveling and outings. It can follow its owners wherever they go in a dog backpack.

Fluffy adventures

Whether hiking in the mountains, sightseeing in the city or a leisurely beach vacation – with the right equipment and a little planning, you and your Coton de Tuléar can experience unforgettable moments.

At lofty heights

Air travel with a dog requires some preparation. Find out about the flight conditions and fees for dogs well in advance. Small dogs usually travel in a transport box under the seat. Get your four-legged friend used to the crate early on and familiarize him with carrying it. This will make the journey a stress-free experience for your Coton de Tuléar. Good to know: The PeakStone Backpack meets the requirements for approved transport containers of many airlines. Despite hand luggage, you always have your hands free and can get to the gate quickly.

Train adventures

On many trains, dogs are allowed in special compartments, (free of charge) in a transport box or on a lead (with a muzzle). Check the conditions of carriage and buy a ticket for your dog if necessary. During the train journey, make sure that your four-legged friend does not disturb other passengers. Nice to know: Dogs that are transported in a dog backpack, i.e. sitting or lying down, often travel free of charge and do not have to wear a muzzle. And best of all, they always have their own “safe space” with them. It’s best to check with the relevant train company in good time.

Exploring the Walt on foot

Many cities offer dog-friendly restaurants, cafés and sights. Find out in advance and plan your route. Keep your dog on a lead and watch out for other passers-by. Take plenty of water and treats with you to keep your four-legged friend hydrated. Walking together in nature strengthens the bond between humans and dogs. Choose a suitable hiking route that suits your dog’s fitness level. Make sure you have enough water and snacks on the way. Carry your Coton de Tuléar in a dog backpack if the route becomes too long or too strenuous.
