Anyone interested in a doodle will sooner or later come across the Aussiedoodle. A charming mix of Australian Shepherd and Poodle, it not only looks beautiful, but also impresses with its intelligence, energy and a healthy dose of ‘will to please’.
But is the Aussiedoodle really the perfect family dog, as many say? What do you need to consider before falling in love with its cute button eyes? And is there even a suitable TARIGS dog backpack for Aussiedoodles?

Between sheepdog and genius: the origins of the Aussiedoodle

Like many designer doodles, the Aussiedoodle originally comes from the USA. In the 1990s, the aim was to combine the intelligence and hypoallergenic coat of the poodle with the enthusiasm for work and loyalty of the Australian Shepherd. This makes the Aussiedoodle one of the first hybrid dogs (a deliberate mix of two dog breeds) in the designer dog boom.
The result: a dog that learns at lightning speed, loves to move and prefers to be involved in everything. Sounds fantastic, and it is! But only if you are prepared to keep up with this clever bundle of energy.

Character: When intelligence meets sensitivity

Aussiedoodles are little all-rounders. They learn incredibly quickly, observe closely and love to solve tasks. Whether it’s agility, trick dogging or long hikes – the main thing is that they get to join in and move around.
But beware: this intelligence also has a downside. An Aussiedoodle that is not kept busy will find something to do itself. And that can be quite creative, sometimes even destructive.
High sensitivity is also typical of the breed. They react sensitively to moods, changes and stress. They thrive with loving, consistent leadership. However, they do not cope well with hecticness or strictness.

Everyday life with an Aussiedoodle

An Aussiedoodle is not a dog for couch potatoes. It wants to run, think, play and explore. Daily walks, preferably with training sessions or search games, are a must.
It can get used to living in a flat as long as it gets enough exercise and mental stimulation. However, it is happiest when it lives with an active family that takes it everywhere – whether on hikes, to the lake or on a stroll through town.
Training it to stay alone is also important. The Aussiedoodle is very attached to “its” humans and needs some practice to stay calm when left alone.

Easy to care for? Only to a limited extent.

Many people automatically think of a ‘doodle’ as an easy-care dog that doesn’t shed. But it’s not quite that simple. Depending on its genetics, an Aussiedoodle’s coat can be more like a poodle’s or more like an Aussie’s, and therefore require different levels of care.
As a rule, regular brushing (several times a week) is necessary to prevent matting. In addition, ears, eyes and teeth should be checked regularly.
The advantage is that many Aussiedoodles actually shed less, which makes them interesting for allergy sufferers. However, there is no guarantee of this.

For whom is the Aussiedoodle the right dog?

The Aussiedoodle is perfect for people who:

  • like to be active and want to spend a lot of time with their dog,
  • enjoy training and doing activities together,
  • are looking for a sensitive, intelligent four-legged partner.

Despite its active nature, there are a few reasons why a TARIGS dog backpack can also be a helpful support for an Aussiedoodle. As a puppy or senior dog, an Aussiedoodle is not as active or able to cover long distances. A TARIGS backpack can also be a suitable solution in the event of injury or illness. Our largest MountainRock Backpack has a maximum load capacity of 20 kg, making it suitable for many Aussiedoodles. A dog backpack also comes in handy in rough terrain when it becomes too dangerous for your four-legged friend.

It is less suitable for people who have little time or are looking for a dog that ‘just goes along for the ride’. The Aussiedoodle wants to be part of your life and not just a pretty accessory.

Conclusion: A heart on four paws, with energy and brains

The Aussiedoodle is a real bundle of energy with a big heart. It combines intelligence, sensitivity and joie de vivre in a way that is simply inspiring. If you give it time, exercise and attention, you will get a loyal companion that is up for anything – from hiking to cuddling.
But as with all doodles, before making a decision, you need to ask yourself honestly: is this dog really right for me and my everyday life?
If the answer is ‘yes’, then you can expect a very special companion in the Aussiedoodle.
