A dog backpack is not a dog bed: on the trail, most dogs prefer to lie down compactly, sit, or lean against your back for protection, support, and a sense of security.
Having extra space in a dog carrier is therefore not an advantage. If you select a model that is a size too large, your dog will have too much room and could slide around in the worst-case scenario. The more movement your dog has inside the backpack, the more you have to balance out those weight shifts while carrying it.
Additionally, the larger and wider the backpack is, the more unwieldy it becomes on hikes. We recommend choosing a snug fit rather than sizing up—keeping your dog secure and your carrying comfort optimal.
